Heat health and pressure on local NHS services: 26 June 2026
Health and care organisations across Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire are working hard to keep people safe and deliver the best possible care during the current period of exceptionally hot weather.
The red heat-health alert for the South West has been extended until 11pm on Friday, with NHS services continuing to experience increased demand linked to heat-related illnesses. Some services are also managing workforce pressures due to school closures and childcare responsibilities.
Our website has the latest advice and guidance on staying safe in the hot weather and accessing the right NHS services. Please share this information with your contacts, colleagues, communities and partners. We would also welcome support in sharing heat health advice through your social media channels, newsletters and community networks.
You can also amplify our heat related social media posts on Facebook, X and Instagram.
Heat-health advice
Hot weather can have a serious impact on health, particularly for older people, young children and those with long-term health conditions.
People are being encouraged to stay hydrated, keep their homes cool, avoid direct sunlight during the hottest parts of the day, and check on vulnerable family members, friends and neighbours. Knowing the signs of heat exhaustion and heatstroke and what to do if symptoms develop is also important.

Using the right NHS services
During the current pressures, it’s important people use the most appropriate NHS service for their needs.
A&E departments and 999 services should only be used for serious injuries and life-threatening emergencies. Anyone who needs urgent medical help but is unsure where to go can visit 111.nhs.uk or call 111 for expert advice and guidance.
Community pharmacies can provide advice and treatment for a wide range of common conditions, while GP practices, urgent treatment centres and minor injury units continue to provide support for non-emergency health concerns.
Thank you for helping us share these important messages and support local communities during this period of extreme weather.
