Introduction of identification verification checks by Companies House

The identification verification regime is the latest measure to be introduced under the provisions of the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023, which has granted Companies House enhanced powers and authority to reduce the risk of fraud.

Who needs to verify their identity?

New and existing directors/LLP members, Persons of Significant Control (PSCs) and those delivering documents to Companies House will be required by law to verify their identity. This will be over a phased timeframe as follows:

From Autumn 2025

  • New appointments – Director/LLP member/PSCs

  • Existing appointments – Director/LLP member/PSCs as part of the confirmation statement filing process (12 month transitional period)

From Autumn 2026

  • Those filing documents on behalf a company (e.g. a company secretary)

Individuals may voluntarily choose to verify their identity from 8 April 2025 ahead of the legal requirement.

How to verify identity

Individuals can verify their identity using the following methods:

  1. Online – using the free GOV.UK One login
Further details can be found at Verifying your identity for Companies House - GOV.UK

  2. Via an Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP)
Documents from an approved list can be provided to a registered ACSP for verification. Milsted Langdon LLP is a registered ACSP and will be able to carry out this chargeable service for clients.

Once successfully verified, a Companies House personal code will be issued to the individual which should be kept securely. This code will be required when a company confirmation statement is filed and when filing any new appointments.
