The UK Government has announced a '5 point plan' to reduce immigration

UK Government announces plans to reduce migration by 300,000.

The Home Secretary has announced a new five-point plan to reduce immigration.

Although exact changes are yet to be finalised the proposed measures are:

  1. Student visas: the government will be asking the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) to review the graduate route.

  2. Family visas: The minimum financial threshold for a family visa will be raised to £38,700, this currently stands at £18,600.

  3. Health and Care Worker visas: Overseas care workers will not be able to bring family dependents.

  4. Skilled Worker visa minimum salary: The salary threshold for a Skilled Worker application will rise to £38,700 - although health and care workers will still be able to earn less before applying for the route with the Home Secretary stating that health and care workers will be exempt from the threshold increase.

  5. Shortage Occupation List (SOL): The government wants to reform the way people working in short-staffed sectors can apply to come to the UK. The Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) have already suggested that individual occupations should be examined to establish salary level thresholds and any preferential immigration concessions.

It is thought that in total, this package, plus the reduction in student dependents, will mean around 300,000 fewer people will come come to the UK in future years.

Yesterday the UK government made significant updates to its immigration policy, including raising Skilled Worker salary thresholds and removing the ability of overseas care workers to bring in dependents.

Takeaways

While harsh, the good news is that the care sector is exempt from the salary increase, meaning that sponsorship still remains a viable option for your business!

Impact

With tighter restrictions, we expect recruitment pressures to mount, and sponsorship to play an even more vital role in your workforce strategy.
