Updated guidance on stroke rehabilitation

Our latest guideline says that people who have had a stroke or experience continuing impairment or limitations on their activities should be offered additional rehabilitation to help them recover. It recommends that people should be offered needs-based rehabilitation for at least 3 hours a day on at least 5 days per week.

A 2-page visual summary to aid discussions about care and support between healthcare professionals and people who have had a stroke is now also available.

New draft guidance on harmful gambling

Our new guideline aims to ensure that those needing help or who are at risk of harmful gambling are identified sooner and receive appropriate help. NHS England has opened 12 gambling treatment clinics across England since 2019, with a further 3 due to open in the coming months. These clinics are expected to see 3,000 people a year. Our useful and usable advice will help these NHS clinics as they develop their service.
Consultation on the draft guideline is open until Wednesday 15 November.

Carers' Rights Day

Carers’ Rights Day takes place on Thursday 23 November. This annual event seeks to raise awareness of carers' rights and entitlements, to help carers get the support they need.

For those supporting adult carers, we have a guideline available on this topic. It aims to help health and social care practitioners improve carers' lives by identifying and equipping carers with the right information and support. It covers carers’ assessments, practical, emotional and social support and training, and support for carers providing end of life care.

Care Quality Commission publishes State of Care report 2022/23

State of Care is the Care Quality Commission’s annual assessment of health and social care in England.

This year’s report includes a focus on maternity services and health inequalities. It says that poor communication is affecting the quality of care for women and other people using maternity services. The report highlights our guideline on antenatal care which outlines  key principles for effective communication with pregnant women and their partners.

With regards to health inequalities, the report references our guidance on sickle cell disease a condition particularly common in people with African or Caribbean heritage. The report highlights that poor care in sickle cell services will have a disproportionate impact on this group. It calls on NHS trusts to implement our guidance, helping to ensure people who experience a sickle cell crisis can access timely and effective pain relief.
