Mental Capacity Awareness & Practical Updates Workshop

Designed for social care providers looking to increase awareness of the Mental Capacity Act (MCA) and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS). This awareness will help when developing strategies to support an individual to make decisions and reduce the risk of depriving someone of their liberty, especially during the Coronavirus Pandemic.

We invite Kate Barnes from South Gloucestershire Council to give us a quick update on the Proud to Care winter campaign. Then we shall be joined by Dameon Caddy from North Somerset Council for an update on the Mental Capacity Act. Finally, we will provide a brief overview of the Workforce Development Fund and how this might boost your training budget. Each speaker will offer the opportunity for a Q&A.

0955 - Welcome and Protocols - Karen Holley, Care & Support West

1010 - Proud to Care Winter Campaign - Kate Barnes, Adult Social Care Programme Manager, South Gloucestershire Council

Ahead of a busy winter for our care sector, we have launched a brand-new campaign designed to encourage residents to consider working in care.

1025 - Mental Capacity - Dameon Caddy, MCA/DoLS Manager, North Somerset Council & BNSSG CCG

Unlike the Care Act, the MCA and the related DoLS has not been altered by the emergency Coronavirus Act (2020). The individuals most at risk from Covid-19 are likely to be the group of people who are protected by the MCA such as those with learning disabilities, autism or dementia. This means the five principles on which the MCA is based, still apply and are as important as ever. Dameon Caddy will lead us through a practical 30-minute session, highlighting the key takeaways from updated policy, procedure and care.
