BNSSG 6D training

BNSSG 6D Dementia Training provider secured for 2025/26

BNSSG Locality Partnerships (LPs) would like to introduce 6D Dementia Training to locality partners. 6D Dementia training is a cross-sector initiative designed to enhance integrated working and improve dementia care outcomes across the region.

The 6D training model provides professionals with a framework to develop personalised, non-medicalised interventions, equipping both individuals and organisations with tools to deliver high-quality, consistent dementia care.

If a person with dementia becomes distressed, it’s important to understand what is happening why it’s happening and how best respond. 6D offers techniques to effectively communicate with people with dementia and advice on how best to offer care and support in a way that helps the person to feel safe and secure.

Designed specifically for health and social care staff working in specialist dementia care teams. When staff understand the person with dementia, it’s important that they write care plans to ensure that everyone who supports with that person understands them, what their needs are and how best to engage with them to meet their needs with as much independence as possible.  Training is focused on developing skills to write care plans that explain what is  happening, why it’s happening and how best to respond.  The style ensures that care plans are accessible to everyone who has contact with the person of dementia. There is a suite of tools to support assessment and timely formulation and intervention.

Training will be rolled out throughout 2025/26, ensuring system-wide access to expert-led education and resources.

Training Overview

The 6D Dementia Training programme is structured into three key components:

  • 6D Dementia Team Training (6D DTT): Online, self-paced modules ensuring workforce standardisation across settings, with additional role-specific content for various care environments. Live webinars provide ongoing professional development.

  • 6D Specialist Dementia Training (6D SDT): Bespoke, in-person sessions tailored to specific teams and services, integrating 6D into care pathways.

  • 6D Advanced Specialist Training (6D AST): Leadership and supervision training delivered through live online sessions, enabling teams to embed 6D principles into daily practice.

Who Will Be Trained?

A broad range of system partners have been identified to participate through LPs communities of practice, including:

  • AWP (South Glos & North Somerset): Community mental health teams, Care Home Liaison teams, A&E Liaison, and Memory Services.

  • Dementia Wellbeing Partnership (Bristol): Integrated agencies supporting dementia casework.

  • Voluntary and Community Sector (VCSE) partners: Including the Alzheimer’s Society.

  • Domiciliary Care Providers & Care Home Hubs: Supporting admission avoidance and early discharge.

  • Primary & Secondary Care Teams: Frailty teams, NCHIP teams, Sirona Wellbeing and Community Nursing Teams.

  • Hospital Liaison Teams: North Bristol Trust and University Hospitals Bristol & Weston.

Training Rollout

Training will be delivered in phases, with online modules deployed first, followed by in-person specialist training and live supervision for advanced practitioners. The programme is designed to ensure all teams are equipped with the skills to provide high-quality, integrated dementia care.

This investment underscores BNSSG’s commitment to building a skilled, cohesive workforce, ensuring consistency in dementia care across the localities ecosystem.

More detailed specific communications will be made to teams across the BNSSG footprint via Locality Partnerships in due course.
