NHS industrial action: 17 December to 22 December

NHS industrial action: 17 December to 22 December

The NHS in Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire will be working hard to maintain priority services including emergency and critical care, maternity and trauma care during planned resident doctor strikes that start on Wednesday 17 December.

Resident doctors, formerly known as junior doctors, will be striking from 7am on Wednesday 17 December until 7am on Monday 22 December.

We will continue to update our website with the latest guidance on the strike action and encourage you to share this information with your contacts and local communities.

Using NHS services during strike action

We’re reminding people that they should continue to use health services as normal during the strike action, including 999 and A&E in life-threatening situations and NHS 111 online for other urgent health concerns.

GPs and pharmacies can also be used by people for health advice and appointments as normal.

People with hospital appointments during this time should attend as usual. If the appointment needs to be rescheduled due to the strike action, the NHS will be in contact.

Our website has detailed information on local services including community pharmacies, which can help with a wide range of minor health issues and advise if another NHS service is needed. We also have our Stay Well This Winter webpages with lots of useful advice on staying well during periods of colder weather.

‘Help Us Help You’ messages

We are asking people to choose services appropriately during the strike action to help ensure care is available to those who need it most. This includes using 111 online as the first port of call for health needs and only using 999 if it is a life-threatening emergency.

We are also asking people to play their part by taking simple steps to look after themselves and their loved ones, as well as checking in on vulnerable family members and neighbours as part of our Stay Well this Winter campaign.

Local clinicians are also seeing and treating more people with respiratory conditions, but small steps can have a big impact in reducing the spread. By practising good hygiene, knowing when to stay off work or keep children off school, and taking up the offer of vaccination, local people can protect themselves and their community this winter.

Please do engage with our social media posts and share them where you can. Our content will be published throughout the strike period.

Many thanks for your support.
