IPC&M Care Provider Bulletin - July 2023

Government announces proposed legislation on visiting in health and care settings
New regulations will make visiting a legal requirement for hospitals, care homes, mental health units and other health and care settings. Care regulator will have new powers to make sure providers are allowing families to visit loved ones. People in care homes and hospitals will be able to have visitors in all circumstances, thanks to the government’s plans to bring forward new legislation.

Consultation description

We’re seeking your views on visiting in health and care settings to inform our decisions around making visiting rules mandatory for the good of service users.

The Department of Health and Social Care wants to ensure that visiting (including accompanying people to hospital appointments) is protected and that it remains a priority for health and care providers so that patients and residents can receive visitors whenever it is reasonable and safe.

Understanding Glove-related Contact Dermatitis

For health care and care providers protecting the integrity of the skin on their hands is critical. Damaged or non-intact skin places both the patient and the worker at risk because it prevents effective hand hygiene. It also provides opportunities for micro-organisms to be transferred between patients and staff, and for skin lesions to become colonised by bacteria, potentially leading to infection.
