REPORT: Mouth care training and support for care homes: Determining the actions for improvement
Please find attached the report: ‘Mouth care training and support for care homes: Determining the actions for improvement’ which was developed as part of my fellowship in Population Health hosted by the Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire (BNSSG) Integrated Care System (ICS), and funded by NHS Health Education England.
Thank you for connecting with me this year and for your contribution.
This report considers:
Current provision of mouth care training and support for care homes in BNSSG ICS
Unmet needs and gaps in access to training
Key stakeholders across adult health and social care
It provides recommendations for action to improve access to training and support for care home teams.
These include, to:
Prioritise the oral health of older people and care home residents
Support care home teams to achieve best practice in mouth care for residents
Integrate oral health into EHCH Framework implementation through BNSSG Ageing Well
Include oral health as part of each Local Authority’s Health and Wellbeing Strategy
Connect further with stakeholders involved in advancing care for older adults
Consider use of flexible commissioning for oral health interventions
Explore development of a Multidisciplinary Teams (MDT) pathway for Primary Care Networks (PCNs) to include a dental professional to support care homes
Further actions will be championed through the BNSSG Oral Health lead networks, (details can be found in the stakeholder list in the report).
My fellowship has now come to an end and I will no longer have access to this email address but you can contact me on: sara.harford1@nhs.net
