The Art of Dementia

  • Weston Artspace 73 High Street Weston-super-Mare, BS23 1HE United Kingdom (map)

Our Dementia Day Service provides engaging activities for those over 55 who are living with dementia as well as giving well-earned respite to their regular carers.

We have been working with a local Artist at the Day Centre; she has been working with the customers on an art project which is going to be used for an exhibition. It consists of a vibrant collection of miniature artworks using a variety of techniques and themes; all of which will come together as one installation. We have been working on this project as part of Dementia Action Week ( 15-21st May) and will use the exhibitions to raise awareness of Dementia and diagnosis – which is the theme of this year’s action week.

In Jo’s words; ‘Each piece of work has been painted with lots of love, happiness and positivity with no pressure to create a masterpiece but to simply enjoy the process of creativity’

Our vision is to start a conversation about dementia outside of Dementia Action Week ...

"The exhibition is about how it affects everybody including our loved ones and their family and friends; the carers and volunteers too. It will also provide an opportunity to talk about the power of art and how it allows the mind and body to relax and be present in the moment whilst preventing isolation and gaining a sense of achievement."

We will be displaying the artwork at the Wellness Day Centre from Monday 22nd May – Thursday 25TH May and inviting customers, families and carers to come into the centre to have a look during this week.

The artwork will then be displayed at Weston Artspace, The High Street, WsM on Saturday 27th May 2023 from 10am – 4pm. We are hoping to get some interest from the Weston Mercury and the Mayor to attend the event – however nothing has come from this yet! We will also be joined by Alzheimer’s Society at the exhibition.

When the exhibitions are over we will present the customers the work that they have completed to take home.
