It’s Now or Never
In the early hours of this morning, Andy Burnham was announced victorious at the Makerfield by-election, winning 55% of the vote share, paving the way for his return to Westminster and firing the starting gun on his bid to become Labour leader and Prime Minister.
Throughout the campaign, Burnham signaled that tackling social care reform would be a priority, suggesting that, if he makes it to No.10, he will seek more urgent and radical reforms this year.
This summer is our chance to secure change. It’s now or never.
Burnham’s run for the Labour Leadership means social care has a very real chance to move up the agenda within Westminster – but only if we keep up the pressure.
Care About Care is calling for:
An immediate £625/yr pay rise for care workers.
The introduction of a ‘fair cost of care’ enabling fair treatment for all.
A new investment fund to support SME-sized providers to upgrade services.
We have been here before.
Politicians have promised change, only for social care reform to be kicked into the long grass.
But we’ve also missed our moment to stand up and be heard. The 2024 election. The 2024 Budget. The immigration and visa reports. The funding for the Fair Pay Agreement. The 2025 Budget. Neighbourhood health plans.
We can’t afford to miss this moment.
If we unite now and speak with one voice, we can make social care impossible to ignore.
