Brunelcare home hosts a wedding ceremony for resident in his 70s
After 42 years together, Valerie (73) and Patrick (78) have finally tied the knot at Brunelcare’s Deerhurst Care Home in Bristol, where Patrick now lives. The heartwarming ceremony included five bridesmaids which included, four care staff, and even a fellow resident, plus two flower girls, making it a true community celebration.
The couple first met in North London in 1983, later moving to Devon in 2010, and then settling in Bristol to be closer to family. Patrick, a former bricklayer, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2020, and as his condition progressed, he moved into Deerhurst Care Home in December 2024.
Concerned that his declining health and living away from Valerie might affect their decades-long relationship, Patrick found the courage to ask Valerie to marry him, and she joyfully said yes.
Valerie said:
I’m unsure why we haven't married before, we’ve not really thought about it I suppose but, I’m so happy to have married Patrick, albeit 42 years later. We had a fantastic day and we’re so grateful to all the staff at Deerhurst for making it possible.
The ceremony took place on Saturday 23rd August at 4:30pm on Deerhurst’s private beach. Family, friends, and staff joined the couple for a celebration with music, food, and laughter, marking a truly memorable day.
Although Patrick’s health meant they could not marry legally, the symbolic ceremony was a beautiful testament to their love, celebrated with everyone who has supported them throughout their journey.
The Deerhurst team went above and beyond to make the wedding day truly perfect, from decorating the beach and preparing food, to ensuring residents were dressed and ready to share in the celebrations. Their efforts were a wonderful example of the dedication and compassion shown by Brunelcare teams, highlighting how person-centred care is at the heart of everything they do.
Lesley Hobbs, Care Home Manager, said:
This is the second wedding we’ve hosted at Deerhurst, and it was truly beautiful. We’re delighted to have been part of such a special occasion and wish Val and Patrick all the happiness in their married life together.
Valerie and Patrick’s story is a moving reminder that love, joy, and meaningful moments can thrive, even in the face of illness. The couple share three children together and six grandchildren, all of whom celebrated with them on Saturday.
