Tell party leaders they can’t ignore social care

Join us as we ask party leaders to #showusyoucare

I’m Ismail. I'm the parliamentary and government engagement officer at Mencap and I also have a learning disability.

Mencap has been pushing for change on social care with our Why We Care campaign. Social care is a really important issue for people with a learning disability and the people who support them.

That’s why we’ve joined forces with the Care and Support Alliance on their ‘Show Us You Care’ campaign. We’re supporting it and hope you will too!

Lots of people think social care is just about older people. But lots of disabled people, including people with a learning disability, need support from social care too. It helps us be more independent and learn how to take good care of ourselves.

Getting good social care is not always easy. Sometimes, people have to wait a long time to get their needs assessed by their council. Disabled people who get benefits often have to pay towards their social care from their benefit money, which can leave them with little money left to live on. And support workers are not paid enough for the hard work they do.

Our joint letter with the Care and Support Alliance is asking all party leaders to promise they will improve social care if they are elected to form the next government.

Mencap is co-chair of the Care and Support Alliance, which includes over 50 charities that support disabled people, older people and carers. This is a really important campaign that could make a big difference!

Social care is a huge issue that hasn't been talked about enough in the election, but together we can show that it isn't an issue that can be ignored.

Please sign our joint letter to all party leaders today and ask them to #ShowUsYouCare

Thank you.
