Does dementia not come with normal ageing?
No, it is not an inevitable consequence of getting older, a lot of elderly people go their entire lives without ever having dementia. Normal ageing may cause various conditions, and some age-related memory problems. It affects people from all walks of life and the cause as yet remains unknown
It is believed that Alzheimer’s disease is probably caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. It is possible to have more than one form of dementia for example Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia. It is a condition that results in too many brain cells dying and generally it is progressive.
The condition is occasionally referred to as brain failure. It is a term used to describe a set of symptoms, the brain cells deteriorate more quickly than they do during the "normal ageing process." Memory loss, a reduction in cognition and reasoning, as well as issues with self-care, nutrition, and communication, are among the symptoms.
Dementia is a word used to describe poor memory, thinking, or decision-making that interferes with performing daily tasks, these can include;
Finding it difficult remembering things and people, not being able to remember recent events, misplacing items and struggling to find words in conversation,
difficulty in understanding instructions and unable to find their way around familiar surroundings, they become incapable of performing normal routine chores. They can start to wonder who they are, where they are, and what time it is.
This is very upsetting for the individual, friends and family to understand and accept therefore an early diagnosis will benefit the individual and their family and friends as it can support them to put steps in place to maximise their quality of life and get the help they need.
Having knowledge of Dementia its symptoms and affects will give you a greater understanding and therefore help you to support those needed.
