NHS ENGLAND: CALL FOR BEST PRACTICE

CALL FOR BEST PRACTICE – Upskilling care home staff

This document is a call for best practice to support the upskilling care home staff project of the Independent Care Sector Programme.

What is the call for?: Examples of joint working between care homes (both nursing and residential homes), homecare providers, housing organisations and NHS organisations to upskill care home staff.

Types of activities we are looking for: provision of e-learning; provision of formal training; hybrid working models (or rotational working); buddying/role models/shadowing. We are particularly interested in examples of training staff to deliver health procedures and prevent unnecessary hospital admissions. Procedures could include (but not limited to): blood taking; medicines administration; using syringe drivers; catheterisation; rehydration; end of life care; dementia awareness.

Who are we asking for help?: care home providers, homecare providers, care commissioners, Clinical Commissioning Groups, other NHS organisations, training providers, local authorities, housing organisations

How will any examples provided be used? NHS England and partners are working to develop new guidance on how NHS organisations can support care sector staff to take on new skills, as part of the suite of Quick Guides available at www.nhs.uk/quickguides. We want to hear about the work that is already happening across the country and showcase this for others to learn from; alongside details of national work and materials available. We will not publish any material from you without your explicit permission in advance.

How can you respond? Please could you respond to call for best practice by completing the template in the email below and returning to England.ohuc@nhs.net with the title 'best practice' by 12 September 2016. Many thanks for your support with this important piece of work.
