The following policy updates have been curated from the week commencing 10th April 2023.
DHSC - Amazing update on Reform & Workforce
I am unsure if you have already seen the below but thought I would share as this is fantastic news for our sector and we should try and get as much of a response as possible from our own and our member organisations. Top 2 articles/links found at the below web address:
DBS Outreach
The DBS Regional Outreach Service focuses on working collaboratively with local authorities, organisations and networks, to develop relationships and raise awareness of the DBS as a safeguarding body.
As part of my role I am working with organisations and networks across the South West in a number of ways, including:
answering DBS related queries and providing advice by email and phone;
attending meetings, training sessions, and conferences virtually or in person;
developing and delivering presentations, workshops, or webinars to provide an overview of DBS, the different level of DBS checks, and barring referrals;
collating feedback or suggestions on DBS and feeding this back.
The Regional Outreach team provides a free service, and workshops can be tailored to support an organisation’s safeguarding needs and safer recruitment.
We currently offer workshops on the topics of Disclosure and the Legal Duty to Refer, which usually cover the following aspects:-
Legal Duty To Refer
the benefits of DBS and your organisation working together
what is ‘regulated activity’ with adults and children
when a DBS barring referral should be made, including when the legal duty is met
the three different barring referral routes
how to make a good quality barring referral
the consequences of not making appropriate barring referrals
the consequences of being included on one or both Barred Lists
Disclosure
the benefits of DBS and your organisation working together
the different levels of DBS check
eligibility - when an employee is eligible for a check
what is ‘regulated activity’ with adults and children
what is work with adults and children that is not regulated activity
the DBS Update Service and its benefits
safe recruitment practices, with DBS checks forming a part of these
If you feel that either, or both, of the above workshops may be helpful to any of the teams within your service, or to the providers you commission with, I am happy to discuss further if that would be helpful.
If there is anything further which you feel I can be of support with please do not hesitate to contact me.

(Reminder that C&SW is a member of ihm and that C&SW members are --- via that --- a member of ihm as well and gain access to this opportunity).

In essence this training is already paid for! Please find attached a document outlining the 4 modules of the workshop.
We can tailor the workshops to suit training themes within your organisation, let us know your requirements and we will weave it into the modules, on the attached document is a list of the main themes we cover
The four modules are delivered over one day
Max. numbers will depend on venue size. We typically say 40 per session with classroom-style seating/ 4-8 per table.
Participants will receive an electronic certificate per module attended
CPD points can be gained for attending this course through our High Performance Leadership (HPL) Framework HPL Dashboard – IHSCM (ihm.org.uk), 1 HPL point = 1 CPD point. Membership is free for your staff as part of the Hub package.
Please take a look at the attached short document on the workshops, have a think about any specific content you require and let us know of some available dates to discuss content and planning of these sessions. Please note our availability for delivering these workshops is currently from June 2023 onwards.
We look forward to hearing from you in the near future.
