The Healthwatch Bristol’s quarterly open advisory group is an opportunity for Healthwatch to share what members of the public have told us during the quarter about their experiences of health and social care services with service providers, commissioners and voluntary and community sector organisations.
The open meetings also function as a forum for networking between organisations which encourages partnership working between groups. Healthwatch Bristol’s most recent open advisory group event took place on 8 March at The Park Centre, Knowle, and the focus of the event was ‘Understanding my health and social care’.
Healthwatch Bristol shared information about our work with a range of communities and voluntary and community sector organisations including: hearing from people with learning disabilities who use services at The Hive about their experiences of arranging and attending appointments at their GP; learning from older people attending LinkAge Wellbeing Days about where they look for information about taking care of their health; finding out about the experiences of homeless people using some of Bristol’s homelessness services and speaking to children and families about their use of dental services. At the open advisory group event, Healthwatch Bristol also shared information about the NHS England Accessible Information Standard and asked attendees, including members of the public, staff from health and social care services and organisations, Local Authority services and voluntary and community sector services, to share their thoughts and ideas about the Standard and its implementation on post it notes, by speaking to Healthwatch staff or by taking part in two focus groups which took mental health and learning disabilities as their topics.
